Equally as impressive are our rolling hills offering a rural lifestyle. You'll hear locals often remark that when they get home they feel like they are on holiday – and it's true.

Right on the Porirua Harbour, beside the busy motorway, lies the man-made Aotea lagoon. This is a popular spot with locals and visitors alike. In these safe calm waters you can feed the ducks (they are always at lagoons), sail model boats or canoe.

The Aotea Lagoon Rose Garden is home to 18 varieties of roses that provide a stunning setting for summer weddings and weekend outings. The shadehouse lawn provides a perfect backdrop to the rose garden creating a peaceful spot to relax and unwind in. Landlubbers can either picnic or play in some of the many spots beside the lagoon, walk or just spend the day lazing in the sun.

The children's playground, one of the Attractions is located at the northern end of the lagoon. The facilities include equipment suitable for a range of ages inlcuding the under 5's who have a range of "Koala" modular equipment based around enclosed bubbles to choose from.

We cannot ignore the role the police play in our communities. They participate in all events whether tragedies or celebrations. The New Zealand Police Museum in Porirua recognizes that with intriguing exhibitions of historic occasions, such as the protests against apartheid and violence that erupted surrounding the Springbok Tour, the Mount Erebus plane crash, the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior and the early 1913 industrial strikes. The museum is a family-friendly facility with interactive activities for kids to complement the fascinating historical data. Guided tours are available.

The Porirua Skate Park is situated on Te Rauparaha Park, between Pataka and the Te Rauparaha Arena. A gigantic 900 square metre area consisting of one smooth bowl, banks, rails, grinders and fun boxes for extra air time. This is a must see! Bring your board, bike, blades, and of course your mates to catch some serious air. The skate park is open, spacious and floodlit at night.
